Saint Paul rewards the curious eater. Behind residential corners and historic facades, you will find some of the absolute best food in the Twin Cities. Here are five spots you cannot miss.
Chimborazo
A true neighborhood anchor serving Ecuadorian and Andean food. Expect a line at the door on most nights, but it is entirely worth the wait. You are here for the llapingachos con chorizo: a massive, cheese-filled potato pancake served with a fried egg, perfectly cooked chorizo, and a rich peanut sauce. It is unique, incredibly filling, and entirely addictive.
Zait & Za’atar
A casual Mediterranean dhaba on Selby Avenue that perfectly blends Middle Eastern and South Asian flavors. You can get juicy shawarma, fresh baba ghanoush, and crispy Indian samosas all in the exact same order. Do not skip the chaat menu, specifically the pani puri dripping with tangy tamarind. It is fast, fresh, and consistently fantastic.
Little Brazil Market & Cafe
Tucked under an apartment building near the river, this tiny spot does a little bit of everything. It operates as a coffee shop, grocery store, bakery, and restaurant all at once. The Pao de Queijo (traditional Brazilian cheese bread) is chewy and perfect, and their savory pulled-chicken empadão pies are incredible. Grab a pastry and a coffee and browse the imported groceries while you wait.
El Cubano
Hidden away in a quiet residential area off Dodd Road, El Cubano is serving up massive, butter-toasted Cuban sandwiches that will ruin you for all others. They layer perfectly roasted meat, tangy mustard, and pickles, pressing it all together until it is a crispy masterpiece. Pair your sandwich with an order of fried yuca and their signature mojito dip.
Holman’s Table
Sometimes the best hidden gem is hiding inside a stunning piece of history. Located right on the tarmac at the downtown St. Paul airport, Holman’s Table is housed in a gorgeous Art Deco terminal building. They serve beautiful, elevated dishes that perfectly match the vintage-chic atmosphere. It is an incredible dining experience where you can watch private planes take off while you eat.
